Orangewood Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (Fed’l tax ID #95-3616628) and one of the leading providers of services to current and former foster youth. Our mission is to prepare foster and community youth to reach their greatest potential. We help almost 2,000 foster and community youth annually prepare for independent adulthood.
Without guidance, encouragement and resources these teens are unprepared to make the transition from foster care to self-sufficient adulthood. Within 18 months 40-50% become homeless and unemployed. Our programs focus on four critical areas: health and wellness, housing, life skills & employment, and education. We meet a broad array of needs: from groceries and a hot meal, to transitional housing, to life skills workshops and employment leads, to our innovative Samueli Academy charter high school and scholarships for college and graduate school.
Proceeds raised from The Orangewood Adventure Challenge specifically fund vital educational services and support for former foster youth including our scholarships and grants program. Last year, we provided over $525,000 in college scholarships to 233 former foster youth. 48 of our college students graduated, which is significant when you consider only 2% of youth from foster care graduate college. We also awarded $73,000 in Advanced Studies scholarships to 14 former foster youth pursuing advanced degrees. We are proud to assist our youth in developing and achieving their educational goals. The Orangewood Adventure Challenge is a fun way to ensure that we can support even more former foster youth on their educational journeys.
